Client: SRK Consulting Ltd. (BC Ministry of Air Land & Water Protection)
Location: Britannia, British Columbia
The remediation of acid mine drainage from this abandoned underground and open pit copper mine involves a team of regulators and contractors. Located adjacent to a major salmon fishery, the project poses geotechnical, environmental and community challenges related to mine closure and design of a water treatment plant. The water treatment plant represents a significant phase of the Britannia Remediation Project and we congratulate EPCOR (design build Finance Public-Private partner) and the Province of BC on its completion.
To facilitate the mine remediation, Klohn Crippen Berger investigated the geotechnical stability of a key tunnel plug. The tunnel plug creates an underground reservoir of mine drainage fed by rain and melt water entering the mine via glory holes and open pits. A central project issue is the hydrology of the mine water reservoir. Klohn Crippen Berger also supplied and installed extensive instrumentation and automated flow controls, and was involved in obtaining regulatory approvals from government agencies.
Services:
- Safety investigation of tunnel plug
- Instrumentation and geotechnical monitoring
- Water management
