Inco–R4 Tailings Facility
Client: Inco Ltd.

Location: Sudbury, Ontario

Completion Date: 1996

Project Highlights: Design and construction management of the Inco R4 Tailings Facility

Inco’s Central Tailings Area in Copper Cliff, Ontario covers an area of about 5,500 acres, and is the largest impoundment of acid-generating tailings in Canada. The Central Tailings Area has been in use since the late 1930’s and will continue to provide tailings storage for Inco’s Clarabelle Mill until known ore reserves are exhausted around the year 2030. The Clarabelle Mill design throughput is about 40,000 tons per day. Tailings production is about 36,000 tons per day, with about 27,000 tons per day directed to the Central Tailings Area. To meet Inco’s long-term tailings storage needs, Klohn Crippen designed and managed the construction of the “R4” Perimeter Starter Dams. Development of the “R4” Area in conjunction with the other three “R” Area impoundments will facilitate tailings storage through the year 2030. Upon filling the “R” Area, the Central Tailings Area will impound approximately 800 million tons of tailings.

In developing the “R4” Tailings Area design and managing the Perimeter Starter Dam Construction Klohn Crippen provided site investigation, design, contract administration and construction management services over 3 years, including geotechnical and hydrological studies and slurry-pumping systems evaluations. Klohn Crippen continues to provide ongoing consulting services for the entire Central Tailings Area, including regular filling updates, water management plans, and geotechnical assessments.
