Client: Devon Canada Corporation
Location: Canadian Beaufort Sea, Pakota Site
Completion Date: 2003-2004
Project Highlights: Structures foundation design
Devon Canada has identified the Paktoa site as a preliminary drilling target in their Beaufort Sea Exploration Drilling Program. The Paktoa prospect is located in a water depth of 12 m, about 45
km northwest of Richards Island. Exploration drilling is expected to commence during the winter season 2005-2006. In addition to reviewing options for drilling the exploration wells, Devon Canada
is reviewing potential development scenarios for the field. The first phase of development consists of two appraisal well sites with four subsea silos and the concurrent preparation of the pads
necessary for the drilling structures.
The second phase consists of deploying the Production Structure, two additional appraisal well sites with four silos and the laying of four 10 inch diameter flow-lines, totaling 11 km, to connect the
appraisal wells to the Production Structure. During the same time period, 15 km of 20-inch diameter submarine pipeline will be laid connecting the Production Structure to tie-in with the
near-shore portion of the pipeline, which will be installed from the ice during the winter. The change from winter, off-ice construction to summer, marine construction occurs at about the 4 m
water depth. Initial site investigations were completed off the ice in April 2003 and confirmed that near surface conditions include soft ice-scoured marine medium to high plastic silts and clays,
becoming firmer with depth. Ice scours up to 3.8 m deep were identified close to the site, thus pipeline burial is required. It is proposed to use a jetting tool to bury the pipeline up to 5m below
the sea bed surface.
