The BC Ministry of Transportation retained R.F. Binnie and Associates Ltd. to carry out functional planning and design to upgrade the final 9 km of existing Hwy 5A / 97C (Coquihalla Connector) from 2 lanes to 4 lanes. Klohn Crippen Berger was retained by Binnie to provide geotechnical services and structural design services for several new vehicle and cattle underpasses. The project included the upgrading of several intersections and accesses onto the highway.
Geotechnical services included a review of previous investigations, carrying out additional site investigations (boreholes and test pits) and related laboratory testing, and geotechnical design recommendations. Recommendations included maximum cut and fill slopes, pavement design, slope stability assessments, subsurface drainage, input for foundation design at underpasses, and treatment in areas of soft soils. Structural design included assessment of design options and proprietary design drawings and criteria for several vehicle / cattle underpasses.
