Client: British Columbia Ministry of Transportation
Location: Highway 1, Kicking Horse Canyon, British Columbia
Subsequent to the award of a $17M road and bridge construction project on the Trans Canada Highway, Emil Anderson Construction and Klohn Crippen Berger developed a Value Engineering redesign for a 2.1 km section through the Kicking Horse Canyon. The tendered design had included two bridges with west-bound traffic traversing the Kicking Horse River. Through careful realignment of the highway in extremely rugged terrain, the need for the two bridges was eliminated. This was achieved through the use of a unique cantilever structure. The cast-in-place concrete structure is founded on rock-socketed pipe piles and cantilevers 4.5m over the river. The analysis required fine adjustments in the road alignment using CAiCE, and careful rock stability assessment on the south side of the highway. Cost savings resulting from the alternative construction exceeded $2 million.
In May 2007, Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd. received two awards for Excellence in Concrete Construction in the categories of top Public Works Project and Special Applications: Technical Merit from the BC Ready Mixed Concrete Association for the Kicking Horse Cantilever Structure.
