Client: British Columbia Ministry of Transportation
Location: Highway 3, Sparwood, British Columbia
The Crowsnest Highway is a major arterial link between the northwestern United States and southern British Columbia and Alberta in Canada. The existing bridge required replacement and an adjacent dangerous at-grade railway crossing required an overpass. Klohn Crippen Berger provided complete preliminary and detailed design services including highway design, structural, geotechnical, environmental, utility relocation and drainage design with an integrated in-house team. Two new bridges were designed and the highway was realigned including redesign of an intersection. Construction staging was a critical issue in the design to maintain traffic in the busy corridor. Two sensitive creeks in the area required careful environmental assessment and liaison with agencies. The integrated in-house team was a major advantage in efficiently delivering a sound design for this complex multidisciplinary project.
