Lytton Bridge Project

Client: British Columbia Ministry of Transportation

Location: Lytton, British Columbia

In February of 1995, the British Columbia Ministry of Transportation selected Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd. to provide preliminary and detailed design services for the replacement of the Lytton Bridge in Central BC. Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd. was responsible for designing the replacement of the bridge to suit the new highway alignment immediately adjacent to the existing structure. After investigating several alternative bridge types, Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd. decided on a 225 m long, four-span bridge with three 2.5 m deep continuous steel plate girders with a composite concrete deck. A complicated south abutment and founding rock below the river piers required careful geotechnical consideration during the design process.

In 1998, a redesign of the bridge was undertaken by Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd. to include an S-curve horizontal alignment. This redesign was required to accommodate right of way considerations pertaining to First Nation land on the north end of the bridge. Creative solutions to complex geometrics, difficult traffic control and complicated construction staging issues played a significant role in the design.
