KCB has been involved in the design and construction management of the Hamata Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) at the Hidden Valley mine in Papua New Guinea since the early 2000’s. The TSF life of facility will be realised by 2024 but expansion studies are being considered to extend the tailings storage opportunities for the Hidden Valley mining operation.
The mine owner, Harmony (South-East Asia), has successfully managed to implement an isolation strategy at the Hidden Valley mine in compliance with the PNG National Security Plan and State of Emergency. Production has been maintained at the mine during this period in line with the Harmony COVID-19 standard operating procedure.
The construction and performance monitoring of the tailings dam has been ongoing during this period, despite the KCB design team being offsite during the enforced pandemic travel restrictions. Strong working relationships between onsite and offsite personnel with regular communication and data sharing has provided KCB with confidence that construction risks are being well managed during this period. Harmony is maintaining regular communication with all stakeholders to enable operations to continue with their top priority being the health and well-being of employees. KCB construction management personnel look forward to returning to the Hidden Valley mine as soon as the regulatory authorisations are in place to continue to provide technical assistance and guidance to manage TSF construction risks and to meet the design intent.
