Bryan Watts receives the EIC’s K.Y. Lo Medal

Congratulations to Bryan Watts for being awarded the Engineering Institute of Canada’s (EIC’s) K.Y. Lo Medal for signification engineering contributions at the international level.

Bryan was nominated by Alex Sy, and endorsed by Dr. Norbert Morgenstern, Professor (Emeritus) of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta, and Dr. Jean-Marie Konrad, Professor of Civil Engineering, Université Laval.

The K.Y. Lo Medal was established in 1997 to recognize and encourage Canadian contributions to the field of engineering on the world stage, and to honour K.Y. Lo, Professor Emeritus of the University of Western Ontario. For details on this award, including the list of past recipients, please click here.

In Bryan’s 40-year career in geotechnical engineering, he is recognized, both nationally and internationally, as an authority in mine tailings dams. He has worked on projects across Canada and in more than 20 countries around the world. He serves on Technical Review Boards of many international tailings dams. He has participated in forensic investigations of several major tailings dam failures, including the deadly November 2015 failure of the Fundão Tailings Dam in Brazil.
