Dr. Alex Sy Inducted as a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada

Alex-Sy-thumbnailVancouver, BC, March 16, 2015 – The Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) have announced the 2015 recipients of its honors, awards and fellowships. We are pleased to announce that Dr. Alex Sy has been inducted as a Fellow of the EIC for his exceptional contribution to engineering in Canada.

“I want to congratulate Alex on this well-deserved honour,” said Len Murray, President and CEO, Klohn Crippen Berger. “Alex applies a balance of technical excellence and solid corporate governance to his role as VP, Engineering for KCB. In this role, which he has held for the last 13 years, Alex has contributed to the growth and maturity of our organization and mentored a host of young professionals. He is an excellent role model not only as an engineer and a businessperson, but also as a family man and member of the community.”

Alex Sy has made significant contributions to the profession as a manager, designer, analyst, researcher and educator. Alex promotes the close interaction of engineers and geoscientists across many disciplines including seismology, structural and geotechnical engineering.

Through his research and on-going involvement with the University of British Columbia, he has been at the forefront of theory and application of advances in seismic design. Alex’s methods of obtaining SPT data in gravelly soils and his work on Large Diameter SPT and Becker Penetration testing remain industry-leading practice. Findings from the work are summarized in his over 40 technical papers.

Alex has made significant contributions to the profession not only through research and innovation, but also through the application of his theories on national and international projects that he has worked on over his 30-year career.

He has mentored many young professionals through his leadership role at his firm and through his role as Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia. Alex has spent many years serving as Chairperson of the Business Practice Committee for the ASFE / GBA where he worked with members to improve business processes to help reduce risk and increase profitability. He now serves on their Board of Directors.
