KCB Receives ACEC-BC Awards of Merit for Vedder Bridge Replacement and Salmon River Diversion Projects

April 9, 2018

KCB was presented with two Awards of Merit for the Vedder Bridge Replacement Design Build Project and the Salmon River Diversion Decommissioning Project at the 2018 ACEC-BC Awards for Engineering Excellence Gala. The event, held Saturday, April 7, celebrated the technical excellence of talented ACEC-British Columbia member firms.

About the Projects

The new Vedder River Bridge is a highly attractive, two span 80 m long bridge with a 60 m steel tied arch main span with hanger rods in a “ray” arrangement. The innovative design used a “kingpost” and cable system to launch the bridge, a world first for a steel arch bridge. The same system was then re-used to “de-launch” the old bridge for demolition.

The Salmon River Diversion was constructed to divert flow for power generation at BC Hydro’s Ladore and John Hart Hydro Facilities. In 2016, BC Hydro engaged Klohn Crippen Berger and Hatch to lead the design team in decommissioning the facility and naturalize fish passage into the upper Salmon River watershed. The project was completed successfully within the allowed instream work window.
