Klohn Crippen Berger Wins 2022 ACECBC Award of Engineering Excellence

May 10, 2022

Klohn Crippen Berger (KCB) received an Award of Merit for the St. Mary Low-Level Outlet Valve Replacement Project at the 2022 ACECBC Awards for Engineering Excellence Gala on April 28, 2022. The annual event recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of BC’s consulting engineering companies.

About the Project

In 2018, KCB was contracted by the Government of Alberta to replace critical valves within the low-level outlet (LLO) of the St. Mary Dam, while maintaining water flows to wildlife and farmers, ranchers, and small towns living downstream. KCB worked alongside prime contractors VAG Group, Hibbard Inshore and Simpson Industrial Services on the project.

The project was completed in 2020 and involved innovative construction methods, such as the use of underwater remotely operated vehicles to install an isolation barrier (see photo) upstream of the valves, prior to valve replacement. As part of the work, a 1 km long riparian bypass pipeline, compete with intake and discharge structures was also installed.
