Killam South Abandoned Gas Plant

Alberta, Canada

AltaGas contracted KCB in 2005 to conduct a Phase II Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) to delineate potential on and off-lease soil and groundwater impacts from a former facility. Klohn Crippen Berger’s multi-disciplinary team conducted an in-depth review of previous Phase II ESAs and designed/implemented an intrusive soil and groundwater sampling program. Analysis of the data obtained satisfied the terms and conditions of the site’s Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) operating approval, and helped establish management and remediation plans to reduce the social and environmental risks to the surrounding area.

During remedial activities, KCB encountered elevated levels of ammonia. In response, KCB developed an Ammonia Exposure Control Plan which identifies engineering, administrative, and personal protective controls to be implemented in addition to continuous air monitoring during remediation activities.
