Pine River Gas Plant Replacement Bridges

In August of 2001, Westcoast Energy Incorporated retained the services of Klohn Crippen Berger (KCB) to provide full detail design services for two washed out bridges on the access road to their Pine River Gas Plant. Both of these bridges had experienced previous washouts. Engineering services included critical geotechnical and hydrological components. The river hydraulics required flow estimation and hydraulic modeling to determine flow velocity, define required channel width, and determine approach riprap protection. At one site steel pipe foundation piles and precast concrete abutments were used, while cast-in-place concrete abutments on bedrock were required at the other site. Geotechnical design of piles in sand and gravel soils was required.

KCB provided two replacement bridge designs, one 40 m-span and one 30 m-span, comprising steel plate girder superstructures with composite precast concrete decks. As noted above, one of the sites required steel pipe piles to support the abutments.
