Since commissioning of the SAGD Facility in 2004, surface water collected during periods of large runoff (rainfall and snowmelt) has exceeded plant make-up water requirements, resulting in flooding on site. An updated Site Wide Surface Water Management Plan was prepared to address the future handling of stormwater and snow and provide Suncor options for the storage, reuse, and discharge of surface water runoff with acceptable water quality. The surface water management plan includes an additional stormwater retention pond and a snow storage facility and runoff pond.
